Holiday Kindness Counts in the Holiday Season

10 small ways to brighten someone’s day with holiday kindness.

Holiday Kindness

It’s the holiday season here in Oklahoma and we love Christmas and the holidays! Our friends and family members deserve our care and holiday kindness, but so does everyone whom we meet in our lives. As we start to focus on being a ‘Good Giver’ instead of a ‘Taker’, we find more opportunities to enhance our lives and the lives of others around us by living the Christmas spirit and spreading holiday kindness.

Let’s all try to focus on ‘kindness’ this holiday season and then see if we can make this a 2019 resolution to carry us through the new year!

The holidays are more than candy canes, good deeds, a special time of the year, and eggnog.

Why is ‘kindness’ important?

According to research gathered by the non-profit Random Acts of Kindness organization, kindness increases our energy, happiness, and lifespan — and decreases our pain, depression, and stress. But we don’t need science to tell us what we already know: When we go about our days actively seeking opportunities to do little things for others, it makes us feel great.

Here are 10 ways you can leave a trail of warm-and-fuzzy feelings in your wake this holiday season.

  1. Give the gift of a compliment. Make it specific and authentic. Love the shoes of the person in front of you in line at the post office? Don’t hold that thought captive in your head — share it and make that person’s day!
  2. Return stranded grocery carts to the parking lot corral. People will notice — and might be inspired to copy your kindness. And even if they don’t notice, you’ve hopefully prevented someone’s car from getting dinged!
  3. Bring back the lost art of courtesy. Hold the door, be the last one off the elevator and let someone with fewer items get in line before you at the convenience store. Spend time looking for opportunities to be courteous.
  4. Pen a handwritten note to someone. In a time when Americans will send upwards of 781 billion text messages each month, according to statisticbrain.com, old-fashioned handwritten notes carry more meaning than ever.
  5. Greet people by name in a genuine way — at the gym, at work, at the community center and anywhere you encounter people you know on a first-name basis. The Washington Post reports that using a person’s name is the ”fastest and most reliable way of building rapport.“
  6. Give up your parking spot. Yes, the parking lot is packed and you’ve been circling around for 5 minutes. But just think how good you’ll feel letting someone else take the spot.
  7. Tip big — maybe not as big as the man who recently gave a Chicago waitress $11,000, but even an extra dollar or two beyond the standard 15–20 percent is sure to make your server feel appreciated.
  8. Make a donation. Regardless of the size of the gift, generosity ”lights up the same part of your brain that responds to food,“ according to a 2016 report from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Not feeling that flush with cash? Volunteer your time!
  9. Spring for treats. Whether it’s a tray of chai lattes for your book club or an ice- cold bottle of water for your mail carrier on a hot day, you’ll be delivering a big-time day brightener.
  10. Smile. Not only will you provide a warm connection point for another human being, but you’ll also be giving your brain a feel-good boost. The mere act of showing off your pearly whites activates neural messaging in your brain, reports Psychology Today — and that boosts your health and happiness.

Can you think of more ways to create kindness in our world? It really costs us nothing to share an attitude of kindness and the rewards for ourselves and our world will be more fruitful than you can imagine! Let’s all work on making Grace Pointe Living the epicenter of holiday kindness this Christmas season!

How’s Your Blood Pressure?

Did you read about the study on South American tribes and the result of diet on lifelong blood pressure issues?

We all know that living the good life at Grace Pointe Living is the way to spend your best years. Whether you are retiring or just want to make a downsizing move into a quality 55+ community, you’ll want to enjoy your best years while having them be healthy years.

Here’s a very interesting excerpt to a study at John Hopkins that might interest you if you are concerned about your blood pressure and the effect on your life.

In the U.S. and most other countries, blood pressure rises with age, beginning early in life. Results of this study support the idea that the tendency in Westernized societies for blood pressure to rise with age is not a natural part of aging but could result from a cumulative effect of exposure to Western diet and lifestyle.

The findings appear November 14 in the journal JAMA Cardiology.

“The idea that rising blood pressure is a result of aging is a widely held belief in cardiology, but our findings add to evidence that rising blood pressure may be an avoidable consequence of Western diet and lifestyle rather than aging itself,” says Noel Mueller, PhD, MPH, assistant professor of epidemiology at the Bloomberg School and member of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research.

For their study, the researchers took blood pressure measurements from 72 Yanomami aged one to 60, and found no trend towards higher or lower readings as the participants aged. The researchers also measured blood pressure in 83 members of the nearby Yekwana tribe, which is more exposed to Western influences including dietary — and here they found a clear trend towards higher pressure with advancing age.

The Yanomami live as hunter-gatherers and gardeners in a remote rainforest region of northern Brazil and southern Venezuela. Their diet is low in fat and salt and high in fruits and fiber. Studies of adult Yanomami since the 1980s have shown that atherosclerosis and obesity are virtually unknown among them and that they have extraordinarily low blood pressure on average, with no apparent increase as they age.

The new study reveals that this age-stability of blood pressure among the Yanomami starts in early childhood. It is the first to compare the Yanomami to a geographically co-located population — the Yekwana — that has had a different exposure to the Western diet and other Western lifestyle influences.

The researchers, examining members of Yanomami villages in southern Venezuela, found that their blood pressure measurements averaged 95 (mm Hg) systolic over 63 diastolic. (In U.S. adults, the average systolic is 122 and diastolic 71.) This low figure among the Yanomami is consistent with prior studies in Yanomami adults, but the researchers measured roughly the same blood pressure among Yanomami children as well. In fact, the data suggest that blood pressure in this population remains close to the same low level from age one at least through age 60, with no trend towards an increase or decrease.

In contrast to the Yanomami, the Yekwana have been exposed to some aspects of Western lifestyle and diet, including processed foods, through interaction and trade with the industrialized world. While blood pressure readings at the youngest ages were virtually the same as those for their Yanomami peers, there was a statistically clear trend towards rising levels with advancing age — roughly 0.25 mm Hg per year — such that the Yekwana had levels averaging 5.8 mm Hg higher by age 10, and 15.9 mm Hg higher by age 50.

“This age-related rise in blood pressure begins in early childhood — which suggests that early childhood may be a ‘window of opportunity’ for lifestyle interventions to prevent later rises in blood pressure,” Mueller says.

To put these findings in context, in the U.S. systolic blood pressure rises by about 1.5 mm Hg and 1.9 mm Hg per year among boys and girls, respectively, and 0.6 mm Hg per year among adults.

Autumn Active Adult Living for the Fall Holidays!

Life at Grace Pointe Living is Amazing!
Enjoying the Fall Holidays is even better when you incorporate healthy foods into your holiday meal plans!

You might find that fall flavors and smells pack a lot of comforts, calling up memories of mom’s baking, trips to the pumpkin patch, or holiday meals shared with family. If you’re entertaining at Grace Pointe Living this Autumn holiday season, why not incorporate some foods into your menu that actually help to boost emotional moods and your outlook on life?

Grace Pointe Active Adult Living

The nutrients in these five fall foods can deliver a solid boost to your mood.

1. Acorn Squash – There are several health benefits to acorn squash and other squashes in general. Acorn squash is one of the most nutrient-dense squash varieties and contains higher amounts of antioxidants.

An acorn squash contains magnesium, which is an important nutrient for helping with depression and anxiety. If you’re going to eat a vegetable, why not consume one that can positively affect your good mood?

2. Apples – Apples can give you physical health benefits along with boosting your emotional outlook on life. Apples have a high phytochemical profile, they are excellent at preventing DNA damage, regulating hormones, and reducing oxidative damage

3. Pumpkin – How could we ever forget putting pumpkin in our Fall seasonal diet? It sure is much more than just carving a jack-o-lantern for Halloween! Pumpkin contains lutein and zeaxanthin — both of these nutrients are excellent at boosting memory recall in both younger and older adults.

Plus, pumpkin seeds are known to help boost your mood, something we can all use this time of the year. They contain the amino acid tryptophan, which we often equate with Thanksgiving turkey.

Including tryptophan in your diet helps your brain produce serotonin, a chemical known to boost your mood and give you an overall content feeling.

4. Turmeric – Food as medicine is not a new concept. We’ve been using various ingredients in recipes for centuries to help cure many ailments.

Because of its known healing properties, turmeric is considered a wonder spice for so many health conditions including decreasing the symptoms of depression.

Turmeric is great on sweet potatoes, rice, mashed potatoes and just as an overall seasoning. Great health benefits eating this one!

5. Cinnamon – It wouldn’t be Fall if there wasn’t some cinnamon in the air! The smell of cinnamon can change you from a blue funk into a holiday happy place!
Adding this mood-boosting spice to any food or beverage may help stimulate your brain. It also helps regulate blood sugar, which contributes to an overall steady mood.

Cinnamon adds warmth to the flavor in teas, cider, oatmeal, loaves of bread, baked fruit and veggies, and more.

Do you have any favorites in your cupboard that make the Fall holidays special? What’s your favorite ‘mood food’? Enjoy the holidays and keep your friends and family close…it’s the best way to live a life for LIVING!

Active Adults are living the new Sunrise Years!

Today, it’s doubtful that even Whistler’s Mother could be sedentary and happy just rocking away in a rocking chair. Today, Seniors are more aptly described at Active Adults and enjoy Active Adult Living!
Active Adult Living Grace Pointe
You’re more likely to find Senior Active Adults at the gym, taking ballroom dance lessons, going on nature hikes and exercise themed cruises and meetups.

Active Adult Living in the 405 | Grace Pointe Living

When Nike said, “Just Do It”, it seems that many Seniors have taken that advice to heart!
Face it. You may be 55+, you may even be retired, but you’re not one to rest on your laurels of a life well lived. You want physical and mental stimulation. You want to be involved with your community and enjoy the fellowship and community life with like-minded active Seniors! That’s what we are all about at Grace Pointe!
Of course, you’ll still juggle the myriad of family commitments, keeping up with cell phone texts and messages from family and friends, celebrating friends and family birthdays, holidays and more. You also want time for YOUR self-development and progress.
“Studies have shown that people, who stay connected and feel needed, who are personally fulfilled, stand a better chance of leading a long and healthy life.”

The current generation of older people will need more than mall walks, board, games and computer skills. Tai Chi and massage therapy may not be enough. Think exercise themed cruises, gym memberships, walking and running clubs, community college classes and lots of dancing.

Think, “Rejuvenation, Rejoicing, and Renewal”

At Grace Pointe, we appreciate the focus that the new 55+ Active Adult and Senior generation has on their future and happiness. We are here to accommodate your desires to have the best ‘sunrise years’ experience available in the Oklahoma Active Adult Living community! Let’s connect and explore the opportunities!

Keep Your Cool This Summer at Grace Pointe Living

Staying Cool As An Active Adult in Oklahoma

Getting older has many benefits and it also has some drawbacks, just like many things in life.

Active Adults Staying Cool
Living in a hot climate definitely presents challenges to Seniors. Let’s remember that older active adults need to focus on issues of getting too hot, overheated and possible heat stroke!
As we get older, our bodies don’t adjust to the extreme climate and temperature changes as when we were younger. Seniors who are active adults also find themselves dehydrated as their default body state in many instances.
Did you know that 40% of the heat-induced injuries and heat stroke conditions were happening to people who are OVER 65?

Prescription medications can also take their toll on your ability to tolerate heat and high outdoor temperatures.
Thank goodness for Willis Carrier and his invention of modern air conditioning, right?
Here are 5 basic tips to help our Seniors survive Summer in good style!

  1. Take cool showers, particularly midday if you feel the heat getting you down.
  2. Enjoy the outdoors, but do it in air-conditioned environments like recreation centers, a senior center, the library, a fine local coffee shop or shopping at the local mall. Our community also offers a great air-conditioned clubhouse for you to enjoy.
  3. Sitting on the front porch and needing a quick cool down? Soak a washcloth with cold water and place it around the back of your neck. (That’s an old Boy Scout trick!)
  4. Do you love good food? Great, but focus on eating lighter. Try cold tuna or chicken salad, spinach salad, cold soups (they are delicious) and iced tea and iced coffee.
  5.  Speaking of coffee, drink LOTS of cool water during the day. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. Remember, many seniors go through the day dehydrated and don’t even realize they are needing fluids.

Living here at Grace Pointe Living you don’t need to worry about being cool and comfortable indoors at your Ron Walters home, because your home is maintenance free and we have excellent air conditioning systems!

Enjoy your Summer fun and friends, but pay attention to keeping your cool and staying healthy here at Grace Pointe Living.

Add Some Spice To Your Life | Grace Pointe Living Health Tips

Making Your Food Taste Better and Your Health Improved

Who loves spicy foods? Have you ever lamented the bland taste of some foods in cafeterias, hospitals and retirement facilities? Don’t put up with it. Spice up your food for taste and most importantly for good health when you follow these health tips!
Health Retirement Life
We all know that spices and herbs have been used throughout history to make food taste better, preserve food (a necessity before modern refrigeration) and of course for health benefits and healing. Did you know that if you choose wisely you can assist your natural body functions and immune system to help keep your body and mindset in top gear when you reach the age of being ‘retired’?
Yes, herbs and spices can provide benefits in the taste of food, but there are actual curative properties to many spices and herbs. Many scientists are agreeing that food and spices have a good effect on human health. The antimicrobial and antitumorigenic properties of these antioxidant foods and spices make incorporating them into your daily diet a good idea.
What are some of the top picks in choosing a health-enhancing spice for your daily and weekly meal plan?

Garlic with Allicin

Garlic is a strong antibacterial agent and has been shown to speed up DNA repair, kill cancer cells. Garlic has also been studied for its sulfur-containing compounds, which have been found to be abundant in phytochemicals and flavonoids – both powerful anti-cancer substances.

Concerned about skin cancer? A study done at the Amala Cancer Research Centre in India showed that garlic extract inhibited two-stage chemical carcinogenesis on the skin of mice. These results indicate garlic has the potential as an anti-cancer agent as well as an anti-tumor promoter.

Turmeric with Curcumin

Turmeric can be purchased fresh, in its root form (we’ve seen it available at Sprouts and Whole Foods in fresh root form), or dried and powdered. Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which studies have shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and is widely believed to promote optimal liver function.
Turmeric powder can be used on eggs, added to soups and sauces, or rubbed on vegetables or chicken. Chicken Curry is a flavorful dish that includes plenty of this bright yellow spice.

Hot Peppers with Capsaicin

A powerful spice, the hotter the more effective the beneficial effect. A powerful antioxidant called capsaicin can be found in cayenne pepper and other hot peppers including habanero, chipotle, jalapeno, Anaheim, ancho, and Scotch bonnet peppers. Capsaicin has been shown in several laboratory studies to be toxic to cancer cells.

Oregano with Carvacrol

The popular Italian spice oregano is extremely antimicrobial, high in antioxidants, and has been shown to be a powerful parasite fighter as well as a cancer inhibitor. Ounce per ounce, fresh oregano has been shown in a study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to have higher antioxidants than fruits and vegetables. If you grow it in a flower pot or your herb garden, just pinch some off and eat it. It’s good medicine!
Remember that Turmeric, cayenne, garlic, and oregano are all highly toxic to cancer cells, and each one is super easy to add to your daily meals.

Enjoy the great clubhouse and exercise equipment available for your use here at Grace Pointe Living, but make sure to incorporate good food and nutritionally effective spices and herbs to enhance your longevity and retirement life with us!
