Summer Active Adult Living is Here at Grace Pointe

How to Walk Off Weight and Live Your Best Years Ever of Summer Active Adult Living!

Summer Active Adult Living

Walking is a great way to burn calories and lose weight. But there are a couple of things you can do to increase the number of calories burned and to maximize your workout. Three things affect the number of calories burned during a walk. It’s important to know and pay attention to these if you want to leverage your activities for Summer active adult living success!

1) Speed of Walking

Starting out, you may be able to only walk at a pace of 3 mph giving you a pace of 20-minute miles. However, by working up to a walking speed of 4.5 mph, you end up with 13-minute miles. The difference in the number of calories burned is 20 calories per mile. On a one hour walk, that is an additional 92 calories burned.

2) Distance You Have Walked

It stands to reason that if you are walking faster for the same amount of time, that you will cover more distance. However, if you are just starting out, work on distance before speed. The advantage of increasing your distance first is that you build endurance, i.e. you are able to sustain walking at the same pace over a longer period of time. Once you have built endurance, you can work on increasing your speed.

3) Weight of Walker

A 120-pound person burns about 65 calories per mile walking at 3 mph on a flat surface. As a comparison, a 180-pound person walking the same distance and at the same pace burns about 95 calories. Numerically speaking, the above facts would lead you to believe that as you lose weight, you would most likely have to increase your energy expenditure to keep burning the same number of calories. However, what can happen is that as you become fit, your basal metabolic rate increases meaning you naturally burn more calories than you did before.

How to Choose the Best Walking Shoes for Oklahoma Retirement Health and Fitness

Oklahoma Retirement Living Tips and Advice

It’s realizing that you were smart to make the move to a quality Oklahoma retirement 55+ community like Grace Pointe Living and you need to focus on your health and wellness to live a viable, enjoyable life at Grace Pointe.
What would you think would be a great activity that is easy on your joints, brightens your spirits and something you can enjoy doing alone or with a group? How about a Senior Walking Fitness program?
At Grace Pointe Living, we are blessed with numerous opportunities to maximize your health and fitness. We have indoor and outdoor opportunities for fitness and fun! We bring the living back to Oklahoma retirement lifestyles!

Thinking of starting a low impact walking fitness program? Make sure to get good shoes for it!

Because your feet are unique to you, selecting a pair of walking shoes has to be based on what fits your feet the best and not based on looks, reviews or price. The most expensive shoe might not be your best choice.

If you are unsure of what to look for in a good pair of walking shoes, seek advice from a knowledgeable shoe representative in a sports store. They tend to have more experience fitting athletes with proper footwear.

Walking Shoe Features for a Good Fit and Fitness Success

When selecting shoes, look for a pair that gives you the right amount of support, flexibility and cushioning.

Walking Shoe Support:

A shoe right for your foot should fit your foot snugly, but not so tight that it compresses your foot. If your shoe fits too loosely, it can cause blisters and even damage your toenails, if they jam against the front of the shoe. Remember your feet swell during exercising, so you may need a size bigger than what you wear in other shoes.

Walking Shoe Flexibility:

Walking shoes that fit right should bend where your foot naturally bends. If the sole is too stiff, you can end up with foot pain.

Walking Shoe Cushioning:

Even though walking is a low impact sport, you want to cushion your foot safely in the sole. It cushions your heel when it strikes the ground and improves the fit of the shoe.

Oklahoma Retirement Living Fitness Tips and Resources

Always try on shoes before buying. If you plan on buying shoes online, go to a shoe store first and try on the same pair you plan on buying to ensure a good fit.

“Everyone has the ability to increase resilience to stress. It requires hard work and dedication, but over time, you can equip yourself to handle whatever life throws your way without adverse effects on your health. Training your brain to manage stress won’t just affect the quality of your life, but perhaps even the length of it.” –  Amy Morin

Walking Mistakes to Avoid | Oklahoma Senior Living

Walking Mistakes to Avoid | Oklahoma Senior Living

Oklahoma Senior Living

Oklahoma Senior Living is a good life when you retire. You’ve made financial and lifestyle plans to allow you to enjoy the benefits of retirement, making the move to a quality active adult living community like Grace Pointe Living, and now it’s important to make your Golden Years of Oklahoma Senior Living last!

While you may have thought as running as being your best choice for burning calories and maintaining muscle tone, a well-structured walking program can help you achieve great health benefits without the stress and wear on your bones and joints.

Oklahoma Retirement 55+ Communities – Grace Pointe Living

In this Grace Pointe Living post, we’d like to explore the benefits for Oklahoma Senior Living when you commit to engaging in a healthy walking exercise program.

So what’s so great about walking? Isn’t walking considered to low energy and not that effective to get your heart rate up and your body moving to optimum health? NO WAY!

Walking is a great way to get exercise, lose weight and get fit, but if not done properly, it can be counterproductive. These four mistakes are the ones most often made by inexperienced walkers when starting a new walking fitness plan:

  • Stride
  • Shoes
  • Posture
  • Frequency

1) Stride

It seems that if you want to walk faster, you could do so by taking longer strides – increasing the distance walked between one foot and the other. Wrong! Increasing your stride tends to result in an ungainly (and unnatural) walk that can end up hurting your feet and shins. If you want to walk faster, take shorter strides, but more of them during the same amount of time.

2) Shoes

Not all shoes coined as “walking shoes” are good for your feet. If they happen to be too stiff, too heavy or too small, they may actually do more harm to your feet than good. When purchasing a new pair of walking shoes, consult with an athletic store expert. They can size you for a shoe that will be not only comfortable to walk in, but will give you the support, but also the flexibility, your feet need when walking.

Shoes wear out. While your favorite pair of walking shoes may seem like they are not worn out yet, they in fact may have lost their cushioning ability. If you walk 30 minutes per day three or four times per week, plan on buying new shoes every six months. Your feet will thank you for it!

3) Posture

Using proper posture is important when walking. Many people tend to walk with their head tilted forward and their eyes looking down. This creates an imbalance of weight and can lead to neck, back and shoulder problems. Instead, walk with your head aligned over your neck with your eyes looking forward about 10 to 20 feet in front of you. Strive to keep your head, neck, spine all in a line with each other.

4) Frequency

You can walk too much. If you find yourself losing your enthusiasm to pound the pavement, feel tired all day and always have aches and pains, all could be signals your body is sending you to walk less frequently. The most you should be walking is six days per week. Your body needs at least one day to build muscle, repair tore muscle fibers and to put energy back into your muscles.

A better plan yet is to walk four days per week, do some upper body strength training two days and rest the seventh day. Your two days of strength training should alternate with your walk days, meaning you should not strength train two days in a row, but have a walk day or two between them. Doing it this way balances your upper body muscle groups with the lower body and it gives the muscles you use for walking a little extra time off.

Contact us for information on our Senior Living health plans and activities!

Don’t let these mistakes derail your walking fitness program. Take heed, walk smart and have fun! It’s important to engage in a low stress, but health enhancing fun and you’ll find plenty of that at Grace Pointe Living in Moore, Oklahoma!

Independent Living Health Tips | Walk or Run for Your Health

Walking Vs. Running for Overall Health and Fitness?

At Grace Pointe Living, we highly encourage our residents to utilize the exercise clubhouse facility, morning walking club at the Church, and socialize with others at our monthly potlucks and happy hours. Being healthy is a combination of emotional health and physical health!

Senior Independent Living Health at Grace Pointe Living

If you are wanting to take advantage of our amazing walking trails outdoors, or the indoor walking track at the Church, then you’ll want to make sure you are wearing the right kind of walking and running shoes, depending on your level of current fitness.

Walking vs. Running? What’s the best choice for you?

Should you choose walking versus running for overall health benefits? Both aerobic activities are simple to perform and promote weight loss. And both walking and running help regulate a healthy sleep rhythm, elevate your energy levels while awake, and even allow you to maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Running and walking can also be social exercises that you enjoy with friends or family members, and you can take a jog or a hike just about any time of the year, depending on where you live. At Grace Pointe Living, walking and running indoors and outdoors is always an option!

Walk or Run for Top Physical Health | The Choice is Up to You

Just remember that if you choose walking over running to improve your overall health, you will need to walk twice as far as you run to gain the same weight-loss benefits. Running is much more rigorous on your body and burns more calories. But walking is also much easier on your joints since the impact of your foot striking the ground is lessened. If you are just beginning some type of dedicated physical regimen, walking is definitely recommended, and you can always build up your endurance and physical fitness to include running in the future.

Trim your waistline and improve your health

And in some cases, walking can give you many of the same benefits as running, with less downside. For instance, extensive research taken from the Runners and Walkers Health Study shows that both running and walking equally cut down on your risk of contracting age-related cataracts. That significant body of information, compiled from tens of thousands of runners and walkers, also showed that runners could expect a reduction in the risk of contracting heart disease by about 4.5% by running one hour a day.

What are the benefits of walking?

But those who spent that same one hour daily simply walking cut their risk of heart disease by over 9%. Certainly, walking and running both improve your overall health and fitness much more than if you were sedentary instead. So choose whichever exercise best fits your current fitness levels and situation. And for weight loss, running is definitely the better vehicle than walking. That is because of the increased energy expenditure, elevated heart rate, and calorie burn.

You should always consult a doctor before adding any type of exercise to your daily routine. But both walking and running are excellent ways to get you up and active and are low-cost activities which you can enjoy even if you only have a limited amount of time on your hands. There is no argument that running or walking is much healthier than not doing either, so put one foot in front of the other today and begin to enjoy the heart and total body benefits are that these simple but healthy exercises can provide.

Make a Physical Health Plan for 2019

Make a plan this Spring to either use the indoor Church walking and running track or get outside and enjoy the wonderful walking and running trails of Grace Pointe Living! It’s our mission to get more life into YOUR LIFE! Help us achieve that by becoming more involved in your health and enjoying the programs and opportunities we provide to you here at Grace Pointe Living!

What’s the Best Time of Day to Walk for Senior Lifestyle Exercise and Fitness?

Grace Pointe Senior Lifestyles

At Grace Pointe Living, we focus on making sure our residents are happy and healthy and enjoying life to the fullest. Maintenance-free living, social activities, and private homes create a lifestyle that seniors enjoy and make for a community where they can flourish. Senior lifestyle exercise is an important part of our active adult living community focus.

We encourage our Grace Pointe Living family to enjoy new friends, new fun and especially physical activity. Life is better when you are able to get up and enjoy your life without holding back because you fear mobility issues. At Grace Pointe Living, we have wonderful walking trails and indoor fitness equipment for you when those Oklahoma days are a bit too windy for a walk. Speaking of walking, we highly encourage our Grace Pointe Family to start a healthy habit like walking.

If you are interested in leveraging the walking trails, fitness gym, and our community activities to enhance Senior lifestyle exercise opportunities, then you’ll want to do some research on what time of day is best for walking and exercise.

When you are planning out your walking routine, you might wonder if there is the best time of day to take a walk.

From a calories-burned point of view, there isn’t one time of day better than the other to walk. However, there are more considerations than burning calories that may influence when you walk; some bodily functions, and especially the habit of walking, respond better based on the time of day you walk.

The time of day for walks that are best for Senior lifestyle exercise is broken down into four periods throughout the day:

Morning Walks

• Noon Walks

• Afternoon Walks

• Evening Walks

Morning Walking:

A morning walk has several advantages, such as sharpening your mental acuity and revving up your metabolism that will carry through for the rest of the day. So while you don’t burn any more calories by exercising in the morning, you will end up burning more throughout the day by going for morning walks.

The healthy lifestyle improvements that you could experience include improvement in your blood pressure, walking your dog with you, positive mental health and mood boost, walking to improve balance and prevent falls, avoiding some issues of heart disease, and feeling good about establishing a healthy daily routine for yourself.

Noon Walking:

A Noon walk, usually done at work, exercising during your lunch break before eating the healthy lunch you brought from home, reduces stress, curbs hunger and improves blood flow so you can maintain your sharpness throughout the afternoon. If you’re retired at Grace Pointe, then you probably won’t find this time period a problem to work into your daily activities.

Afternoon Walking:

Studies have shown that exercising between 3 pm and 7 pm is the best time to build endurance and muscle. Increasing your endurance not only allows you to walk farther but faster before you’ll get tired.

Building muscle gives your body better definition, tones the muscles you already have along with increasing their size. Larger muscles mean more calories burned per day, but don’t worry, you won’t build enough to give you that bulked look.

The only conflict you might find is that Grace Pointe has many of our social events occurring during this time period. Check with our Social Director to make sure you won’t miss the chance for a great afternoon walk and participating in our wonderful community activities.

Evening Walking:

Exercising in the evening is a good way to reduce stress from a day of work. This time of day can be easier for some people as their muscles are already warm and flexible from the day’s activities. For many people, this perceived reduction of effort required makes exercising more enjoyable than during other times of the day.

A big advantage to evening walking is being able to stop by our clubhouse before or after and still participate in social fun. Sunsets are also wonderful at Grace Pointe Living.

Some people end up not exercising because they can’t find a 30-minute block of time each day to devote to it. However walking time is cumulative – for example, you get the same benefits from walking 10 minutes three times per day as you do once for 30 minutes. So if “chunking” works better for you, then walk according to that plan.

Experts agree that it isn’t the time of day you exercise that is important, but to do it when it best fits into your schedule. As with all senior lifestyle exercise plans, consistency counts, so if you can find a time of day when you can routinely walk, you’ll start to see results sooner and derive more benefits from walking.

Thinking that walking could be a great exercise and pastime for you here at Grace Pointe Living? Come by our clubhouse, visit with our staff and get familiar with our walking trails here at Grace Pointe Living. We provide the facilities and trails to make cardio walking activity a part of your daily health plan, now it’s just up to you to make it happen!
